This one was written in the middle of the worst heat wave I have ever experienced in my lifetime, let alone my time near the beach. There was nothing much to do other than swelter through it and write about it. I find myself taking note of how much water runs in our street gutters on sprinkler day, or how many homes still have lush, green lawns despite a drought which is now the new normal. I will say that along with us, many neighbors are replacing their lawns with drought tolerant natives or "plastic grass". And many have solar panels now. So, there is some hope. I apologize in advance to my grandchildren yet to be born who will have to suffer as a result of my excesses.
